The 2017 Aglianico del Vulture Donato D'Angelo keeps me coming back to the glass again and again to take in its gorgeous mix of dusty dried roses, crushed rocks, menthol and freshly sliced plum. It's seamlessly silky with medium-bodied weight, as a textural wave of ripe black fruits washes across the palate, staining it with salty mineral tones and sweet tannins. The 2017 impresses further throughout the long and characterful finale, as inner violet florals give way to cocoa, which then gives way to salty licorice. While lightly structured and youthfully grippy today, the balance here makes the Donato D'Angelo a pure pleasure to taste already. That said, the best is yet to come.
